Funk carioca is a musical style from the favelas of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite the name, it is different from the funk from the United States. This happened because, from the 1970s, dances began of heavy, black, soul, shaft or funk in Rio de Janeiro. Over time, the DJs were searching for other black music rhythms, but the original name remained. The funk carioca has a direct influence of miami bass and freestyle. The term "baile funk" is used to refer to parties in which funk carioca is played. In spite of the name, the funk carioca appeared and is played in all the state of Rio de Janeiro and not only in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as the gentile "carioca" leads one to believe.
